ML Translation Examples - Aaron

I will share a couple haikus, and their translations according to Google Translate, DeepL, and ChatGPT.

1.

春の海
ひねもすのたり
のたりかな

Google Translate:

The spring sea is calm all day long, calm

DeepL:

Spring Sea
All day long
It sways gently

ChatGPT:

Springtime sea—
all the long day it swells and heaves,
swells and heaves again.

2.

菜の花や
月は東に
日は西に

Google Translate:

Rape blossoms, the moon is in the east, the sun is in the west

DeepL:

Rapeseed flowers
The moon rises in the east
The sun sets in the west

ChatGPT:

Among the rapeseed blossoms,
the moon in the east,
the sun in the west.

Analysis:

In both poems, Google Translate clearly didn't even try; the haikus were condensed into a single soulless line. DeepL and ChatGPT did a better job, at least preserving the idea that it is a poem. DeepL kept the poems concise, while ChatGPT added more flourish.
